Não acertam uma

Porque amanhã é 11 de Setembro de 2007 e Bin Laden continua a mandar cassetes de vídeo à malta. Porque hoje, véspera da efeméride macabra, é de novo o dia-D-do-Iraque com o generalíssimo Petraeus a jurar pelo seu manual de contra-insurgência, pela Bíblia e pela Constituição -é tudo o mesmo por estes dias- que "está tudo bem assim e não podia ser de outra maneira". Porque Portugal, muito por culpa das inenarráveis personagens que tinha no governo da altura, também é responsável pela actual situação no Iraque. Porque Durão Barroso foi e será apenas um Barrasshole. Porque Sampaio errou. Porque Paulo Portas não acerta uma.

Por tudo isso, aqui fica a nossa posição enquanto nação em 10 de Junho de 2003, quando Pablo Doors atingia o seu nirvana, recebendo Rumsfeld em Lisboa.

Portas: [In Portuguese.] The only thing that the international community knows is that Saddam Hussein lied to the United Nations and to civilized countries for a decade. I would like to call attention to the fact that the weapons of mass destruction are not an assertion, they are a real problem. For ten years Iraq deceived the United Nations, first hiding them, then showing incomplete lists, then saying they had destroyed them, then moving them to systematically evade the international rules for containing this weaponry. Iraq is a country the size of France. A weapon of mass destruction might be the size of this podium. Finding something the size of this podium in a country the size of France is not something you can do in either a day or a month. But obviously Iraq today is no longer the threat to either the region or to the world that it was when Saddam Hussein was in power.

Negociar uma chefia da NATO, a base dos Azores, polícia para o Iraque, contratos para os Tugas, Donald para cá, piada para lá, Paulo Portas estava enebriado pelo poder; tinha finalmente chegado o seu momento, finalmente o seu pódio. É que as armas de destruição maciça podiam ter sido do tamanho do seu pódio, do seu ódio. Mas não foi assim.
Quatro anos depois Portugal continua a tentar esquecer esta nódoa, admitindo envergonhadamente o seu papel de escala autorizada numa rede internacional de rapto e tortura. Ninguém acertou uma e os Iraquianos que se lixem. Está tudo bem assim. Deixo-vos com a despedida do nosso Pablito ao Donald. Mais um erro para a história.

[In English.] I'll just tell you one thing, Donald. You said in Washington that we have two things in common. You were elected to Congress with 30 years old; I was, too. You were Secretary of Defense with 40 years old, the first time; I was, too. But there's a third thing in common: after Iraq, we're still in job. (Laughter.)

PS: Verdade seja feita, Rumsfeld é amigo. Pablo Doors ganhou o "Distinguished Public Service Award" do Departamento de Defesa Americano, em Maio de 2005: " for his leadership and service as Portugal's minister of defense". Ah, e parece que agora tem "large experience and contacts with the major global defence industries (HDZ, EADS, Embraer, Lockeed Martin, Boeing, L3, Allenia, Agusta Westland, Steyer, Mowag, Patria, HK, Colt, Elbit, etc)". Vá lá, ao menos alguém saiu com o CV enriquecido.
